Map: Where Americans Are On the Move January 8, 2019 Vermont has been actively working to bring in more new residents, and the state may be having some success in its mission. Vermont was the state with the highest percent of inbound moves in 2018, according to the 42nd annual United Van Lines’ National Movers Study, which tracks state-to-state migration patterns over the past year. Last year,  Vermont launched a campaign  to give eligible people who relocate from another state up to $10,000 to cover their moving expenses, in an effort to attract tech workers and revitalize the state’s aging work force.  States in the Mountain West and Pacific West regions, such as Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Washington, and South Dakota, also are seeing some of the highest influx of inbound moves from new residents. The latest subject: utilities. Relocation company  Move.org  (not to be confused with the political-activist outfit  MoveOn.org ) decided to figure out which states pay the most and least for utilities: electricity, natural gas, internet, cable and water. (Some traditionalists might not think internet and cable should be considered utilities, but, hey, this is the 21st century.) And Oregon came out looking pretty good. Prospective buyers may need to save less money for a down payment, according to a new study by LendingTree. The average down payment amount for U.S. homes dropped in the third quarter by nearly 10 percent, falling from $52,480 to $47,265, the study shows. However, the overall average down payment percentages for conventional 30-year, fixed-rate purchase mortgage offers stayed about the same—about 18.05 percent. 10 Fastest Appreciating Housing Markets in the U.S. Residential home prices are set to appreciate at 4.4 percent nationally, over the next 12 months, according to  Veros Real Estate Solutions'  (Veros) VeroFORECAST that was released on Tuesday. However, housing markets out West are likely to see a much faster appreciation that the rest of the country, the forecast predicted. The latest quarterly forecast covers the 12 months from June 1, 2018, to June 1, 2019, and integrates data from 1,005 counties, 354 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), and 13,877 ZIP codes covering 82 percent of the U.S. population. The forecast for Q2 2018 projected that the 10 highest-appreciating markets were concentrated in five states in the West. The forecast also found ten markets that were projected to see a slight depreciation in home values over the next 12 months.
